We'd just located from Calif. and all my connections to Stanford were just friends on the phone or this new-fangled e-mail thing. As it happened, a connected alumini/Buck Club member took a short consultancy with the firm I was working for. I dropped by to talk football with him. I speculated on who we might hire to replace Green. He hesitated a moment and said " Well, prepare to be surprised. Very surprised. Give me a call in a couple of days." The "Very surprised" line was delivered with a recognizable I-know-something-you-don't-know grin. As it was, within two days, Bill Walsh was announced as the new coach. His work completed, the consultant happened to be leaving that same day but I caught him before he left. I can't recall his exact words, but it was something akin to "Well, how do you like that surprise?" I probably just stood there saying something inane like "Bill Walsh?? I can't believe it. Bill Walsh ??"
