I remember my move-in day as pretty quiet (as perhaps befits a time before the wheel was invented). What I reflected on when I flew back to Providence with my son in 1999 was that in 1965 there was never any thought of either or both of my parents coming out to CA with me. They put me on the plane in Madison, I switched planes in Chicago, and someone from the orientation committee picked me (and several other Stanford frosh who were on the same plane) up at SFO. So the first Stanford classmate I met was the guy in the row behind me on the UA flight out of Chicago. Still remember his name, which I think is just a reflection of what an important day that was to my life.
