There were all sorts of stories about Stanford not having many basic concepts as part of the offense, though the only one I can remember right now is the lack of a "hot route/receiver" as even a concept. Perhaps this was all made up because the team was losing, but it fit an impression he gave of not being heavy on football knowledge.
He was a QB in college. He had a long career as an offensive assistant, then a career as a head coach, and for three years he was an offensive assistant on Steve Spurrier's staff at Florida, including assistant offensive coordinator the year before he got to Stanford. Spurrier is no offensive slouch. Florida won the SEC East, the Orange Bowl (by 33 points) and had a #3 ranking the year Teevens was asst. OC. Florida scored 538 points that year and averaged 44.8 points per game, leading the SEC...the next most was Miami at 30.8. Florida then dropped to 336 the next season.Â
Look, I get that Teevens doesn't get credit, that it was Spurrier's team...but how was it possible that Teevens couldn't pick up basic concepts? How could he suck so badly at Stanford?
