The reason the students were moved is because Jim Harbaugh and Bob Bowlsby thought it was ridiculous that the Stanford bench was always in the sun while the visitors bench was generally in the shade.  They thought that this created a real disadvantage during afternoon games.

The Pac-12 (and maybe the NCAA) has a rule that the student section can't be located behind the visitor's bench.  So in order to move the team to the shady side of the stadium, the student section had to be moved to the shady side as well.  In order to do that, about 400-500 season ticket holders were moved which really pissed off some long time ticket holders and donors.

Credit Harbaugh and Bowlsby for having the guts to approach the administration (Etch and Hennessy) to make the request.  The ultimate approval for the move was given by them.
