One brobdingnagian win already today.
#7 Stanford beat Northwestern 2-1, overcoming an early goal with a quick equalizer, and then holding on after a late tally to knock off the #8 Wildcats.
Big win, and hopefully another step in changing the perception of Stanford's strength. Northwestern is a "made" program in field hockey, and currently checks in at #4 in the NCAA RPI, even though they had already lost 3 games.
Could only follow the gametracker, but Northwestern scored just over 3 minutes into the game, while Stanford equalized from a penalty corner just before the 10th minute. The game seemed to settle down into some back and forth, but the gametracker updates were not that frequent or well-done, so it was difficult to get a sense of what was happening (they never registered Northwestern with a "goal against" for the duration of the game, for example).
However, it did appear that the Wildcats had a big advantage of the run of play early in the second half, drawing 2 green cards and a few penalty corners in the opening few minutes, forcing Stanford into an early timeout. After that in the 48th minute, the game appeared to even out again, until Maddie Secco, the one player Stanford really missed in the lone loss of the season, carried the ball through the midfield and into the circle before beating the keeper. And then held on for dear life for the last 8 minutes or so, including a penalty corner for the Wildcats with just over a minute left.
Sorry I can't be more detailed; looked into watching, and it was interesting that the B1G network charges a "premium" fee for web-only programming; I actually get the network through Comcast, but that doesn't buy access like it does for Pac12Net.
Again, big win - second win against an RPI top-10 team, along with UConn. If they can beat the #14 Wolverines on Sunday, they may actually... move up the rankings. Unless of course some ACC team wins. Then all bets are off ::).
