Yes, definitely a difference between playing cleanly and playing well.  We played cleanly against Army, but certainly not well. 

But playing cleanly also makes it difficult to play well.  The bad plays listed against USC time and again put is in position to have to make big plays to overcome them. 

I also limited the charactertization of our play to the offense.  The offense played relatively cleanly against ASU, but not well, and the defense did not play to its high standard.  But again, our mistakes made the defense look much worse: the two special teams mistakes ended our possession before it started and put Arizona State in immediate field goal position.  That made the final score appear as if we were overwhelmed by ASU.  We certainly were outplayed, but perhaps not 10-28 outplayed.
