The ESPN article has an interesting quote from one of his players (Voldemort finalist Melvin Gordon):
I wonder if he tried to negotiate something with Alvarez (like better salaries for assistant coaches), and Alvarez told him where he could shove it, at which point Andersen realized that his best bet might be to bolt. You are not hurt if you are leaving unless you thought you had leverage on your current employer and they made it clear that your value to them was less than you thought. Pure speculation on my part, but this almost sounds like the Harbaugh/Kansas dalliance, except that sane minds prevailed then.
