They still have massive amounts of debt to pay off for Memorial Stadium ($445 million FTW!) -- one that led to Cal selling naming rights of the field to a video game company for the first time in the program's history -- and the best way to address that debt is by fielding a good football program.

One that puts blue and gold butts in seats. In particular fancy plastic seats with name plates on them and lots of shade.

At the same time though, the university is trying to field said good football program on the cheap.

Paying position coaches roughly 1/7th of competing coaches while being in the most expensive housing market is not a way to field a winning football program.
