Good grab Papa John.
In recent years, Robert Woods, Marqise Allen, and Keenan Allen all contributed significantly as true freshman receivers in the Pac-12. And the biggest contribution Irwin could make is as a threat on the out--which stretches the DBs out to the edge--and the wicked double move he makes out of it, which could tempt defenses to move safeties over to cover over the top. That combination could open up the rest of the field for our offense.
Plus the fact Irwin gets so open automatically gives him yards after the catch and could pressure Pac-12 safeties to stay back to help instead of coming up to stop the run.Â
It's what we have needed to open up the intermediate zones in the middle of the field.Â
If his skills more resembled those of our current backs, he'd merely be a great prospect in waiting. But his skills are unique to those team, so the need for them is immediate--if he can deliver on them, of course. But everything suggests that he can and will. He is a as close to a finished product as we've seen in a Stanford receiver in decades.
