Yes, there have been some factors outside the control of Stanford Athletics that have helped Stanford in addressing its institutional challenges. Some of them:
- The change from Casper to Hennessy/Etchemendy was quite helpful, if not crucial.
- The change from Robin Mamlet to Richard Shaw in admissions was crucial.
- The increase in the Pac-12's TV money made it easier to finance everything from coaches' salaries to facility improvements to summer school.
- The recession of 2008 put a big dent in athletic department finances, putting us into a deficit, but the bull market since 2009 has helped both the athletic department's endowment and the financial condition of our athletic donors.
P.S. In my opinion, the increased Pac-12 TV revenues were delivered by the market, rather than by Larry Scott.
