The announcers today were ranting about that not being called. But it's never called and might as well be dropped from the rule book. When I was a kid back in the 60's I had a book called "Football Rules in Pictures," with drawings of violations and the referees' signals for them. The signal for "pushing, crawling, or helping the runner" caught my eye and I was on the lookout for it.  I'm still waiting to see it called after almost 50 years of watching football.

There is a good reason it never, EVER gets called any more; it's not a penalty.

In trying to gain yardage, ball carrier A44 is slowed by defensive
players attempting to make the tackle. Back A22 (a) puts his hands
on the buttocks of A44 and pushes him forward; (b) pushes the pile of
teammates who begin to surround A44; © grabs the arm of A44 and
tries to pull him forward for more yardage.

I've seen that called.  It was against the Chicago B.ears, in 1985, I think.  It was one of those goal-line plays where the B.ears sent Refrigerator Perry in to block, and after Walter Payton was initially stopped (but not yet down), the Refrigerator grabbed him and threw him into the end zone.

(Actually, now that I think about it, they may have called him for illegal use of hands rather than helping the ball carrier.  I can't remember for sure.)

Thanks, BC. If my old rule picture book was correct, it seems the "pushing" part of the rule must have been dropped at some point.
