A friend was in a class recently and the professor went on and on at length about a rather controversial topic (I'm being intentionally vague, sorry), but not in a way meant to facilitate discussion. It was merely a soapbox rant, the professor telling the students (undergrads) how things should be, and from the sounds of it was saying some borderline prejudiced things in the process. The topic of the rant wasn't even remotely relevant to the course.
I don't shy away from controversial discussion, and I firmly believe that a good debate about an uncomfortable topic can help people grow. I've even been in classes like that, where the professor goes on a tangent, but I've typically just adopted a "grin and b.ear it" attitude and focused on getting the A. However, I have a problem with a professor merely forcing his or her opinion onto impressionable young minds without allowing them the proper opportunity to think about it for themselves, especially when it's a hot button issue.
I know I've seen some educators and administrators on here so I thought I would get some feedback. What does the CARDboard think?
