The personal foul for the late shove was the kind of foul that a ref often calls instinctively. It was clearly after the play was over, was not related to the normal engagement between players, and was visually done right out in the open. That is not usually a "no harm, no foul" situation. Also, it was needed to keep things from escalating. Anderson got right in the Cal player's face after the late hit and they had to be separated. If the refs just warned the players or let it go, the cheap shots would have definitely escalated. Also, the refs are working and warning players throughout a game. I saw a few times when refs separated players who were still at each other (usually involved with sustaining blocks after the whistle) and walked one of the players away while talking to him. I assume they were being warned/counseled about the limits of their conduct. The Cal player knew he was out of line and taking a cheap shot, no warning was needed.Â
