Gino's East IMnsHO (Chicago native). Get the Chicago Fire pizza if you like it a little spicy, but whatever kind you get, saaaasage is the best meat on deep dish.

Winflop has it EXACTLY correct. I concur. It is superb and the sausage is wonderful and abundant!!!!!! I am salivating just thinking about it.

I also think Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, Gino's East, and Pizzeria Uno all do very good Chicago Deep Dish pizzas. Eating at any of those 4 would give you the Chicago Deep Dish experience. (Giordano's is technically stuffed pizza, which is not quite Chicago-style, but in my opinion is close enough)
Also, if you want to try more authentic Chicago junk food, go to Portillo's and get yourself a hot dog with everything, an Italian Beef sandwich (dry but with the gravy on the side to dip into) with the hot pepper mix, cheese fries, and a Chocolate Cake Shake (without the chocolate syrup though).
And if that's not enough, hit up a Potbelly and get a Wreck sandwich with the works. And while you're there, get a bag of the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

Thanks all for the tips. Probably not up for more than one pizza dinner. It looks like Gino's is a chain. I assume all are relatively equal?
I've had the wreck before in airports and it is a great sandwich. I'd assumed they were an airport only chain until now...

I was only aware of two Gino's locations in Chicago (East and West). Both are delicious, but I did actually prefer the Gino's East.

So FarmBoy, which pizza did you try, and what do you think? (no worries if you didn't like it--a lot of non-Chicagoans don't like Chicago-style pizza. it's hard to grok pizza that is so heavy that a grown man can typically only eat 3 slices max)

We did Gino's. I gotta say I was underwhelmed. I love Zachary's in the east bay and have been told I need to try REAL Chicago pizza. Zachary's is far superior, IMO.
Plus, they kept changing my channel. Why would we watch the Florida game in Chicago over UND. When they switched to a soccer match I was done with them.

We did Gino's. I gotta say I was underwhelmed. I love Zachary's in the east bay and have been told I need to try REAL Chicago pizza. Zachary's is far superior, IMO.

This sounds a lot like my typical experience trying to watch a west coast team in a pub in Chicago.

That's true. I never feel very good about watching a Pac-12 team play anyone anywhere unless there's a good reason to expect there'll be an audience for that particular game... i.e. alumni groups and such. There's no obvious base for any team, Northwestern, Illinois, even N,D,

The advice I've been given by friends from Chicago when I have visited them about where to eat pizza has been, "meh, Zachary's is as good or better."

And suddenly I know where I'm eating the next time in the East Bay. Gotta see what the deal is with this Zachary's. Fortunately, in LA where I live, there is one place that does a good Chicago Pizza, which is Hollywood Pies. There's also a Portillo's about 50 miles away. Far enough that I can't eat there every day thank goodness, but close enough that I can make the trek when I get the the jonesin'.
