The parade route is long, and the crowds get thinner as you get far from the start. If you have a car you can get up later and still have a decent view by driving to the second half of the parade route. Anywhere east of Hill St. should be fine. But know that the parade participants get tired so the bands and the dancers are not as dynamic.
You want to be on the south side of Colorado Blvd. so you're not squinting into the sun the whole time.
If you just want to see the floats, skip the parade and go check out the floats up close Thursday morning or in the two days following the parade.

  I did the complete Rose Parade experience in 2000. We took the kids to see the floats the day before the parade (Dec 31) at one of the staging areas (open to the public) where they put on the finishing touches. It's remarkable up close - every square inch truly is plant material. We got up around 5 AM on the 1st to park at a paid garage just off Colorado (had to leave that early because they close the cross streets at 6 AM). At that hour, it's like the country's biggest homeless encampment - thousands of people sleeping/lying on the sidewalk. I splurged and got grandstand seats for the family as well.Â
  My favorite float in 2000? It was a mockup of a roller coaster. A man was in a roller coaster car on rails, seated - then he flipped a switch, the car went down the rails, did a couple loops, then back up. It was real! Our grandstand went nuts, yelling for him to do it again. He playfully cupped his hand to his ear, wanting us to yell louder, then went down, around, and up. Awesome.
  I take it you didn't get grandstand seats. That's okay - when we sat there, I did notice some parts of the crowd on the sidewalk opposite us were only 3-4 deep, so you can get a good view. The advice of others is true - the further east you are (i.e. down the parade route), the thinner the crowds are. The downsides of being further down is that the distance to the stadium is greater - it'll be a long walk, One suggestion is to park near the Metro Gold Line Allen Station (Allen and highway 210) and walk the few blocks to Colorado Boulevard. After the parade, you can take the Gold Line west to Memorial Park, where it's two blocks to the Parsons Corp building, where you can catch the free shuttle to the stadium. The biggest downside of that free shuttle is post-game: the line is incredibly long, because everyone is leaving at the same time. We walked from the stadium to Parsons Corp in 2013 and 2014, as did hundreds or more, because it was simply faster than waiting.

All I can say is soak it up and enjoy every minute of it. When we went to the 2013 Rose Bowl, it was the first time in a dozen years, and I honestly had no idea when we'd be back. Turns out we didn't wait long, but Being back the next year did not take anything away from how magical the experience was in either year. The Rose Bowl is one of those things you never get tired of.

All I can say is soak it up and enjoy every minute of it. When we went to the 2013 Rose Bowl, it was the first time in a dozen years, and I honestly had no idea when we'd be back. Turns out we didn't wait long, but Being back the next year did not take anything away from how magical the experience was in either year. The Rose Bowl is one of those things you never get tired of.

Tomorrow will be the 3rd time in 4 years for me, wife, and 3 young kids. Long day, but totally worth it.

I knew this would be a tough one going into it and hoped we could hang in a shootout, because the more I watched recent games from your offense, the more I realized just how good the Cardinal O was. I thought we would play better on offense and hoped to be able to play some keep away.
Same old story for Iowa going west. We always get our asses kicked. Props to your team. They played like champions.
We were actually a year early in our success in my estimations. Lots coming back/coming up next year. Hopefully we can actually hang in a bowl game next year.
