I think many have speculated this would happen.  Sad to see him go, but it makes complete sense; he's a senior, he has a Stanford degree (I don't think Stanford needs to grant him a release, contra the tweet), and he is stuck behind the Voldemort runner up.  He's not without talent; I think he can start at the right place.

Wow, this really bums me out :(

He didn't have the top end or acceleration of CMac, but he still had a sneakiness to his style that could break ankles. Almost Grunfeld-esque? Sorry to see him go, hope he gets his degree before he does.

Oklahoma State didn't have much of a run game this year, averaging 126 yds/gm - 3.6 yds/carry. That's 9th-9th  in the Big 12 and 114th-114th nationally.
[Rather weird their the same rank both in conference and nationally on both these stats.]

They return all of their RBs so there will be competition for carries.

Here is an honest question:  for players who decide they want to stay for a year after they graduate, isn't there a second admissions decision?  On this board and elsewhere, people seem to assume it is automatic, but don't these graduating players still have to be accepted into a graduate program?  I remember a couple of years ago when Ruef entered an Engineering program--that cannot have been a gimme.  Most master's programs at Stanford are selective and don't just admit anyone.  The athlete would have needed to have taken the right prerequisites, gotten reasonable grades, taken the GREs on time, collected letters of rec, etc.  I imagine most plan this out well in advance, talk to advisers, apply well ahead of time, etc., but their undergraduate years would have to be shaped in such a way as to prepare them for entrance into the grad program.

Or am I missing something?  Do players just delay their undergraduate graduation for a year so they can stick around and take some electives?  Or are there a few MA programs that admit everyone?

Many of them do a "co-term" which is to get a masters degree in the same major they had as an undergrad.  Back in the dark ages this was pretty much a rubber stamp as long as your grades were decent.  If you decide to get your masters in something very different that's another story

Hard to criticize Sanders for at least wanting to look around, when the alternative is another year on the pines backing up CMac.
I could see where he might be OK with doing that if it meant a year of grad school at Stanford would get paid for, but that's his decision.

I think this is fairly common, and IIRC, there are forms to fill out when you're getting ready to graduate (perhaps even an application, even though it would be rubber-stamped).  I would think it would be normal for football players to simply take a few classes the fall quarter of their 5th year and then be done with school, collecting their undergraduate degree on the way out the door while they get ready for the draft (or take another job).  In that sense, it's just an extra quarter, so it's not a full 5 years.  Of course, it's obviously also very common for our 5th year players to pursue a co-term master's degree.  Probably depends on the student, his career goals, and whether a master's degree helps that in any meaningful way. 

If I were a Stanford football player with a reasonable chance at playing in the NFL, I can absolutely see the rationale for taking a relatively light load my 4th year, taking the minimum the fall of my 5th year, THEN getting my degree, and then focus on getting ready for the draft.

I wonder if BJS talks to any of our players who did a graduate transfer last year, such as Patrick Skov. Could provide some interesting perspective. Also wonder if that's something Shaw would encourage or not....Probably depends on the situation. You could tell Shaw was rooting for BJS by his reactions to some of his big runs this year.
