Hoke is reputed as an excellent DL coach and (as we know) an average-ish head coach. Oddly, he hasn't been a defensive coordinator since 1982, when he worked for some Indiana high school. Really good recruiter though.

One weird thing I remembered about Hoke after reading the internet: he does not wear a headset. Which you'd think would make his job harder, but what do I know?

well, except Kiffin had extensive experience as a coordinator as well. Failed head coaches drop down to the coordinator level all the time. Why isn't Hoke the Will Muschamp of the midwest? The Dennis Erickson? It's an odd analogy, for being so unspecific; especially since Hoke's resume is an unusual one. (Having gone straight from position coach to head coach.)

Well Dennis Erickson won a natty so I think it's hard to put him in that mix.  Lots of examples of failed HCs who became good coordinators, just thought Kiffin was one people would easily understand even if the analogy wasn't perfect.

Jason Whitlock, longtime Hoke friend/booster/stan, speculated last fall that Michigan's players were too smart for Hoke in comparison to the, uh, more mentally mediocre Ball State players: http://www.foxsports.com/other/video/whi...erd-101415

I put like zero stock in this theory,* but it is one of the more hilarious excuses I've ever heard. Where Oregon players fall on this spectrum, I'll decline to speculate.
