I think the writer is not atypical of the average Noter Dame subway fan. May or may not have gone to the school, doesn't demonstrate exceptional cranial capacity, yet ardently covets that which Stanford has -- a brand that screams that its the best academic profile of any university with a major sports program, by far...and not incidentally, the best athletic program of any university, and just recently knocking on the door of the best football school.
Noter Dame initiated a branding approach that would introduce them into the conversation as a rough academic equal to Stanford. Obviously that's not remotely the case, but Stanford recruiters will never denigrate Noter Dame, and their coaches, boosters, professors, administrators, alumni and players will not hesitate to equate Stanford and Noter Dame. That gives them half a shot at our favored recruits. I think what's been clear over the years is that if a recruit has academic chops, it's tough to get them away from Stanford if they're willing to depart their home base. Noter Dame would like to have that same ability.
The other half is that historically they dominated Stanford. Noter Dame owns the overall series, and dominated the first six games, with a 5-1 lead through 1989. They won three in a row with teams ranked #2, #1 and #5. But the schools split the next ten games, starting with an upset win over #1 Noter Dame. I recall rumblings from the ND fans at the end of those 10 games, wondering if it were worth it. But then, ND won the next seven in a row, and those rumblings fanished. Today? Stanford has won five of seven, and I imagine that the average Noter Dame fan wouldn't mind if they had a weaker California-based opponent.
