The first day of the women's swimming & diving championships had something special for Stanford.  But I'll leave that for those that might want to watch it on the PAC-12 channel on Friday morning (or one of the other lots of times it will be shown).  The days of the meet (swum Wed. to Sat.) will be shown at 10AM Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Stanford, currently ranked 1st in the nation, is again developing into a really special team.

I've always known the PAC-12 conference was really good.  I was looking at the record book, as published by the conference.  There are 18 events listed, of which PAC-n swimmers, when swimming in a intercollegiate event, hold 14 records that are the NCAA record, the American record, and the US Open record.  Of the other 4 events, PAC-n swimmers hold the NCAA records in two events.

The national championship will be a tough meet to win.  The University of Georgia is ranked #2 and the NCAA championship will be held at Georgia Tech in 3 weeks.  That team on the other side of the bay is ranked #3.

Anybody else feel pissed that the PAC-12 channel spent 5 minutes of their hour (which is all they have for 2 days of the meet) on a replay of a swim from last year.  Ridiculous!  They could have shown this year's 3M diving finals, where Stanford finished 1 and 2.

And I didn't appreciate them missing most of the breaststroke leg of the Stanford 200m MR American record while they focus in on teams that were well behind.  That was the leg that was really outstanding, the only one where the Stanford swimmer was the fastest swim.

And, I'm sorry, but Amy Van Dyken runs off at the mouth.  I wish she'd think more than she talks.  I just have to mute the sound when she's blathering away.  She referred to a "straight-arm stroke" that wasn't there, a swimmer (50F) that finished on her side (not so).  Then on the 200FR, she said the finishing on the side "absolutely made the difference between 1st and 2nd" (which, by the clock, was more than a second).    Does she think people watch this to hear her?

(To contrast, I've always appreciated Cynthia Potter's diving commentary.  I was a contemporary of hers in Houston, but diving was not something I did, but saw it often enough.)

The male announcer was stumbling all over himself during the 200IM.  He kept referring to Elizabeth Pelton (who finished 6th and was never in the race).  That was a good race to watch.  Very close throughout.  We'll be seeing that race between the two freshman for the next 3 years.

Another problem in PAC-12 production:  They indicated the points after 6 events were
U.SC 419, Stanford 413, C.al 372.5.  In the next event, they showed that the finish was 1. C.al, 2. Stanford, 4. U.SC.  And the score after 7 events was shown as U.SC 430, C.al 395.5, Stanford 381.  Huh???  How did Stanford's score drop?    All 3 of those scores are wrong. 

And, oh yea, there were 8 events in the first two days.  I'm guessing they chose not to show both diving events in a single broadcast, so they're moving it to some other day.

The PAC-12 results indicates the score after Thursday (8 events) was
Stanford 557,  U.SC 512, C.al 477.5.  (So, working backwards to figure out the score after 7 events, not counting the 3M diving,  Stanford 469, U.SC 471, C.al 438.5.  I don't know what the PAC-12 channel was smoking!)
