Interesting.  I remember just a few years ago C.al made a big deal about doing a complete re-branding across the entire department (which resulted in some nice-looking threads).  I presume they'll be doing another one now.

Nike's deal with Michigan looks better than Under Armour's deal with UCB.

UCB got a GREAT deal.  We joke about their AD, but the people in the UCB AD that put that deal together really did a great job.

As a private school Stanford does not need to disclose the specifics of their deal and Nike definitely likely has no desire to voluntarily disclose details of their advertising expenses, if given a choice.  However, in addition to Nike to Stanford AD dollars Stanford University has received $500+ million from Nike's founder, Phil Knight.  Phil Knight's net worth, and future donations, likely will remain correlated with Nike's success and market valuation.  So hard to believe Stanford would switch for a few million over a 10 or 15 year deal.

For the 100th Big Game in 1997 Stanford had a deal with Nike.  I remember that because the local media snickered at the idea that the throwback uniforms included a Nike Swoosh.    Seem to recall Stanford AD went to an all Nike type deal in the early 90s.  I vaguely recall watching Women's volleyball in the 90s and wondering what the Nike deal would mean for their use of Mizuno apparel at the time.  Prior to the AD level agreements the individual teams would work on their own deals and Mizuno had some tagline or other that implied that top volleyball athletes (like those at Stanford) wore Mizuno.

Nike's founder has his name on the building across the street from our Athletic Department offices. I imagine there's an institutional incentive for Stanford to stay involved with Nike.
