We managed to finish the suspended game with a W and then eke out a win 3-1. Would be curious to hear any thoughts on the rest of the way. I'm afraid I'm a little too far removed. I know all the Pac-12 teams are within a few games of each other.

Not only that, BobK, but Stanford stands at 11-13 in conference. 17-13 is not going to get us to the automatic bid unless Utah (15-9) has an epic collapse in the last two weeks.

Some curious issues with Pac 12 and western baseball this year.

A. Utah

With two series left, Utah is in the lead in the Pac 12.
This is a team that entering conference play had a record of 3-11. That was hardly against a murderers row.
Even as they started to win Pac 12 games, they still managed to struggle out of conference, lowlighted by three straight losses to Utah Valley.
Now the prospective Pac 12 champ has an RPI of #116.

Anyone know if there were serious early-season injuries involved?

B. RPIs overall.
The conference standings have:
#1 Utah - RPI 116
#2 UW - RPI 49
#3 Arizona - RPI 23
#4 ASU - RPI 34
#5 Oregon - RPI 83
#5 U$C - RPI 99
#7 OSU - RPI 58
#7 c.a.l. - RPI 52
#7 Stanford - RPI 87
#7 UCLA - RPI 89
#11 WSU - RPI 166

Those are some horrendous RPI rankings for a conference that over recent years has at least been part of the Big 3.
The RPIs are also notably poorly correlated with conference position.

C. Someone is going to make the tournament with a much higher (worse) than typical RPI. How high will that go?
Is Utah out if they finish second by a tie-breaker? (they finish up vs UW)
What about a second place UW with a 50s or 60s RPI?

D. The structural anti-western bias of the RPI appears quite strong this year.
The top ranked team west of the central plains is #21 UC Santa Barbara.
Are there really no top 20 teams in the west?

I haven't heard of any dramatic externalities affecting the Utes' season.  Seems like their sophomore and freshman pitchers struggled early on (as well as their hitting) but have found a groove.

Thanks for the info. I guess that's why they're celebrating every little victory on instagram. (Mind you, 38 of 40 seasons at .500 or better is a rather mind-boggling number.)

I agree with that statement, BobK, but my point was that I don't think Stanford gets a bid unless it wins the Pac.
