Sad to hear this. I will always remember him as revitalizing the program, and in particular bringing a toughness.Â

I still have memories of him walking directly through our lacrosse practices every afternoon. We would all stop while Denny walked through our field.
Heroism is not defined by one great act, but by a lifetime of right action.

My freshman year (1977) I remember my friends talking about this great young running backs coach that Walsh brought in to work with Darrin Nelson. Hard to believe that since that time his entire career has passed and now the man has passed.Â

I had watched Stanford football experience middling success in the 10 years prior to Denny Green's hiring as head coach. Stanford's history was that of a finesse offense that would get pushed around by more physical defenses. In particular, Stanford could not beat U*S*C. Between 1976 and 1991, Stanford never beat the T*rojans. Denny Green convinced his players and then convinced fans like me that the Cardinal could be a smash mouth team. I loved that attitude and the results. His teams provided 3 of my favorite memories as a Stanford fan - beating #1 N*otre Dame in 1990, the Revenge of the Play (my all time favorite game) and winning in the Coliseum in 1991 to break the non-winning streak. When Bowlsby was looking for a replacement for the Ted's Other Buddy, I thought, "He needs to find someone who can bring a mindset like Denny Green." I hope that he rests in peace.

Looking further back, he not only built up our program but in the early 80's took a Northwestern team that had a Big 10 losing streak going back years & broke that streak, and I believe was Big 10 coach of the year.Â

The 1990 Big Game will probably always be my favorite game to have seen in person.

That unbelievable finish does not happen if Denny Green plays for the tie after the McCaffrey TD. Instead he went for a 2 point conversion and the win. Another example of the attitude he brought to the Stanford program.
