It\'s an interesting question. I was wondering the same thing.

My guess: The break gives the coaches a three-week decision-making period during which they can develop a depth chart, figure out position changes, and make schematic changes to take best advantage of the available talent. The split schedule also allows the staff, in effect, to extend spring ball for another three weeks, because the players continue voluntary strength and conditioning work during the period when they\'re not allowed to practice.

As I said, this is a stab in the dark. Does anyone actually know?

IIRC, JH also said something about this format giving injured players healing time -- i.e., if you get hurt 1/3 of the way into camp, you don\'t necessarily miss the whole camp.

It might also give players more time to absorb  the playbook then get back on the field to run through as a team.

iirc, Jon Haskins was the one who suggested the split spring to Harbaugh.  you have many of the reasons why (installation of the playbook, healing etc), and I think it allowed a bit more physical play/recovery time in the second session.
