Fun UT blog write up about our game.

Very entertaining write-up, light as it may be on Xs and Os. I particularly liked this comment:
Quote:The only thing I took issue with was the penalty on McCaffreys punt return was a blatant block in the back, not holding. It probably stopped a K-State defender from giving McCaffrey a 10th broken tackle on the play.

Hmm, the most interesting thing me was the comment about Shaw not going for 2 on last TD. I didn't even think about that at the time, probably because I didn't think it was conceivable for KSU to win. But Shaw's job is to be aware of stuff like that, and he absolutely should have gone for 2 to go up 14, instead of 1 to go up 13.

A nice column with a delightful sense of humor. One bit of information I did learn from it--apparently, our home football games are far less commercialized than those of other teams. Since I don't travel, I didn't know. I'm glad we don't have a Taco Bell mascot running around the field at halftime.

It didn't occur to me until after the kick, but I'm really hoping someone asks him about it. Being up 5 vs 6 is basically the same, but 6 vs 7 is a world of difference. It also would be good to practice conversions in relatively low-stakes environments like that.

The mockery would probably be a half-time show in itself!

I'm curious if the marginal benefit of getting two points there was overshadowed by the marginal risk of injury on a 2PC attempt versus a PAT. The game was well in hand by that point.

Also, it could have been blocked and returned for 2 points. (Like in Notre Dame vs Texas near the end of regulation time.) That would have made it a 10 point lead.

This is probably what Shaw would say if asked about it, and what someone needs to reply to the person who made that post on the Barking Carnival story, especially given what happened to Texas vs. ND.

To be fair, a 2pt conversion attempt could also result in 2 points for the other team on a "pick 6" int or fumble return. I don't know what the odds are for those events relative to a blocked kick returned to the house.Â
In any event, I do think Shaw should have gone for 2 based on the pure circumstances of this game, but I bet he didn't want to show his hand regarding his 2 pt plays to future opponents and so opted for the kick. Whether to not that's the right long term play is obviously a judgement call, but it's a call that worked out in this case.

I think it's a fair possibility that not going for 2 was an oversight. I mean, they are all just human and get caught up in the flow of the game as well. I know they're not supposed to be human. But their humanity is the reason they were just as shocked as we were by the onside kick after the safety.

The two-point conversion didn't occur to me either until I saw it pointed out elsewhere. In addition to the injury risk, is it possible they didn't want to put a conversion play on tape when it wasn't really necessary? I don't know that their conversion plays are any different than their third and goal plays, but you never know.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

The conversion plays are probably somewhat different, but there ought to be enough of them that generating film isn't a real concern. I think getting an attempt against an actual opponent outweighs that concern, maybe they (like all of us) just didn't think about it. Like I said before, hopefully someone asks Shaw what the deal was.

Glad they didn't make fun of our susceptibility to the onside kick. You never would have thought that Oregon did it to us twice successfully in the same game a couple of years ago...
