I thought it would be fun in the off week to do a short Rose Bowl quiz. Try to answer these without looking them up:
1. U$C has been the PCC/Pac 8/Pac 10/Pac 12 representative in the Rose Bowl 33 times, with a 24-9 record. Without looking, can you guess which Pac-12 school has been in the Rose Bowl the second-most times? Stanford has been in the Rose Bowl 15 times, second most among Pac-12 schools, and has a 7-7-1 overall Record.
2. Which team has been to more Rose Bowls, Oregon or C.al? C.al has been to eight Rose bowls and has a 2-5-1 record. Oregon has been to seven Rose Bowls and has a 3-4 record.
3. Which team outside of the Pac 12 or Big 10 have been in the most Rose Bowls? Alabama has been to six Rose Bowls and has a 4-1-1 record. They were last in the Rose Bowl in 1946.
4. Has a military academy ever been in the Rose Bowl? Navy tied Washington in the Rose Bowl in 1924. The 1918 game was played between Mare Island USMC and Army's Camp Lewis, and the 1919 game was played between Mare Island USMC and Navy's Great Lakes.
5. Which two Big 10 teams have an overall winning record in the Rose Bowl (greater than .500)? One will surprise you. One won't. Michigan State has a 5-1 record in their six Rose Bowls. Illinois has a 3-2 record in their five Rose Bowls.
6. C.al is the Pac-12 school that has gone the longest without playing in a Rose Bowl (outside of recent league entrants), last playing in 1959. Which Big 10 school has gone the longest without playing in a Rose Bowl, having last played in 1962? Minnesota has played in two Rose Bowls, the last of which was in 1962.
7. How many Ivy league schools have played in the Rose Bowl? Four. Bonus: Who were they and when? Brown, (1916), Penn (1917), Harvard (1920) and Columbia(1934). Harvard and Columbia won.
8. Has a California-based University not in the Pac-12 or one of its predecessor leagues played in the Rose Bowl? If so, who and when? No and never.
9. Only one school from the original Big 10 and Pac 12 conferences has been to just one Rose Bowl. Name the school and the year. #4 Indiana lost to #1 USC, 14-3 in 1968.
10. How many unranked teams have played in a Rose Bowl? How many won? Since the 1937 season, which was the first for the AP poll, the following unranked teams have played in the Rose Bowl:
1944 USC beat #12 Washington, 29-0
1958 Oregon lost to #2 Ohio State, 10-7
1964 Washington lost to #3 Illinois, 17-7
1967 USC lost to #7 Purdue, 14-13
1984 UCLA beat #4 Illinois, 45-9. Yikes...
2013 Wisconsin lost to #8 Stanford juggernaut, 20-13
I'll post the answers in a few days. If you want to look them up, you can find the answers here:
