So, on my drive back home (sadly, during the third quarter, but I had a pair of 11 year olds who were long past their bedtime with me), and Scott Reiss and Todd Husak were wondering out loud whether McCaffrey was injured.  He did leave briefly to the locker room during the game, and never came back on the field in the later part of the second half, even though he had his helmet on.  But more broadly, they were wondering whether something was slowing him down over the last few games.  He didn't seem to be the same guy after he took a shot returning a punt against USC.  And it is true, the McCaffrey who never used to go down after the first hit, and who could run through arm tackles, was all of a sudden struggling to get past the first guy.  Now, maybe it's because the blocking has gotten so woeful that he is being swallowed up whole.  And he did look pretty good reversing field on his one long run of the night.  But it is true that McCaffrey hasn't been the same since USC.  And against UW and WSU, he had 20 carries for 84 yards, COMBINED.

Either our offensive line is worse than I thought, or maybe they are onto something in the "McCaffrey is injured" conjecture.

McCaffrey ran great against UCLA, breaking tons of tackles and dragging guys for extra yards.  If he was injured, it wasn't until UW at minimum, and more likely against WSU. 

It might be a testament to how bad the OL has played the last two weeks that fans are concluding McCaffrey has to be injured to be such a non-factor.  Based on what I saw, he had absolutely nowhere to run the last two weeks, and he was doubled as a receiver too.  Even when the front side was blocked, the backside got whipped so he could be brought down from behind.  Never seen an OL get more throughly dominated in games than the last two weeks Stanford's OL was clowned.

Someone needs to step up and get the unit to play with more intensity at minimum.  A lot less intellectual, and a lot more brutality is needed.

After McCaffery didn't return second half kick-offs even with the game still in reach we kept a close eye on him. Christian was stretching and warming up on the sidelines as if he had suffered a cramp or some other minor ding - juking, changing directions, stretching and other leg related exercises.  Several  coaches and players checked in on him but not with the urgency that comes from a serious injury.  He looked like he expected to go back in while the coaches were acting doubtful and cautious.

This sort of thing often happens behind the O-Line bench to screen view from the opponent's sideline.
