Hi, quick question about the rules regarding my son’s catcher's equipment. I was wondering about the difference between the full, hockey-style mask and the old-school style that goes over the skull cap. I recently purchased the facemask style that goes over the skull cap for my son who has recently picked up catching a big way. In my nervousness, I just ordered [URL=http://"http://www.baseballbargains.com/shop/mizuno-youth-samurai-catchers-helmet-g4-380192/"]this mask[/URL] as well that looks  a lot safer but I know it doesn't have that cool pro look my son wants. Should I bring both with me just in case? Or does anyone know how this aspect of the game is governed? Anything helps!

Young catchers will occasionally turn their heads when the batter swings, and they're also susceptible to the swings of young batters who don't have tight swing radiuses.  In 2015, of the thirty MLB starting catchers, 10 wear hockey style and 20 wear traditional face masks.

As a little leaguer in 2003, my son wore the old style face mask.  Another player ran him over (didn't even try for home plate), my son's head bounced off the plate for his one and only concussion.

having been a catcher in my youth I can tell you that likely he won't make the mistake of turning his head and getting hit by a foul tip more than once (this from the days where you wore you baseball cap under the mask)....
