Yes, it was brutally cold (and windy) that day; I was there.
None of the bowls can pick a team with more than two conference losses more than an available team, which might limit the damage if we can win our last three. Also, I believe some bowls are required to pick the best available team. Thus, I would love to see us run the table and wind up 6-3 in conference.

Clearly it was less novel for Maryland fans. I think there may have been 8 in the stadium.
Anyways, below the Foster Farms it doesn't matter, they're picking in order (of the remaining teams not picked). Then, there's the fact that there are still quite a few Pac-12 games to be played, and those will surely mess up this guessing.

Which is why I don't get the FF Bowl's thinking. Yes, if you were say 30 minutes down the road from Ohio State and they ended up at your third-rate bowl, they would probably still draw 90K. But that's not the way things are. Perhaps given that we are so close they would prefer us to travel better and give them more money, but more people is still more people if it's us versus any other school whose fans would have to travel farther. They're not exactly a prize pig themselves, they're a #4 versus #6 bowl game, they should take whatever gets the most butts in seats; they're not exactly in a situation to make demands.

since ESPN televises most of the "minor" bowl games I wonder how much influence they on who plays where......

It would be fun to see Stanford vs Iowa in the FF bowl. Halftime alone might be worth the cost of admission and the Iowa people might be more inclined to travel for a rematch (if their legislature would allow).

Is the supposition that sure Stanford fans will go to the big bowl games, but not to the ones nobody cares about? I honestly don't know why anyone would go to the other bowl games unless your team hasn't been to one in a long time, and you're feeling good about the season and the future.

Stanford doesn't "travel well," but most fan bases don't. Unless it is the Rose Bowl. They could honestly hold most of these (way too many) bowl games in TV studios for all it matters.
There is no use in posting historical attendance, because that is tickets sold (through any means necessary) rather than people actually watching the game in the stadium and for the lesser bowls appear to be a complete joke. A trip down Stanford bowl memory lane during my fandom based only on memory and Youtube clips that are there for the searching. YMMV.
1986 Gator - Pretty full, although lots of orange (Clemson). Not surprising given the distance.
1991 Aloha - Empty. (Long distance, but it is Hawaii. GT fans didn't give a shit less than a year after a MNC game in Orlando, which was packed to the gills.) Actually that game is never well attended unless Hawaii is playing.
1992 Blockbuster - Ghost stadium. Jim Nance even made a crack about sun glinting off the empty seats. The fightin' Paternos sucked that year and accepted the bowl invite pre-season pending six wins, which is all they would get.
1995 Liberty - Sort of remember an over half fullish stadium in Memphis. I'm still getting crap in the mail from the something or other Village because I contributed to the "Two for Tyrone" campaign to get tickets to anyone with a pulse. Hopefully they found the Lost State of East Carolina eventually.
1996 Sun - Seemed like a decent turn out against Saban and Sparty, but not sure how much of that crowd was the traveling Stanford fan. Local fan support of that bowl game tends to be pretty good.
2000 Rose - Not a packed to the rafters sellout, but Stanford and Whisky represented well. Honestly a crappy trip all around though for us. Game sucked.
2001 Seattle - Joke bowl with nobody there and both teams on same sideline dealing with a baseball field. Tech kinda salvaged a total letdown of a season with the surprisingly easy win. MacWhorter goes undy as Head Coach. Add Tech fans to the long list of people who can't stand LSJUMB. Crossing the Benicia Bridge on the way back, I found out ND had stolen both of my alma maters' coaches within a month.

1991 Aloha - Empty. (Long distance, but it is Hawaii. GT fans didn't give a shit less than a year after a MNC game in Orlando, which was packed to the gills.) Actually that game is never well attended unless Hawaii is playing.
1992 Blockbuster - Ghost stadium. Jim Nance even made a crack about sun glinting off the empty seats. The fightin' Paternos sucked that year and accepted the bowl invite pre-season pending six wins, which is all they would get.
1995 Liberty - Sort of remember an over half fullish stadium in Memphis. I'm still getting crap in the mail from the something or other Village because I contributed to the "Two for Tyrone" campaign to get tickets to anyone with a pulse. Hopefully they found the Lost State of East Carolina eventually.
1996 Sun - Seemed like a decent turn out against Saban and Sparty, but not sure how much of that crowd was the traveling Stanford fan. Local fan support of that bowl game tends to be pretty good.
2000 Rose - Not a packed to the rafters sellout, but Stanford and Whisky represented well. Honestly a crappy trip all around though for us. Game sucked.
2001 Seattle - Joke bowl with nobody there and both teams on same sideline dealing with a baseball field. Tech kinda salvaged a total letdown of a season with the surprisingly easy win. MacWhorter goes undy as Head Coach. Add Tech fans to the long list of people who can't stand LSJUMB. Crossing the Benicia Bridge on the way back, I found out ND had stolen both of my alma maters' coaches within a month.
2009 Sun - OK, good one. See above.
2011 Orange - "Stanford, meanwhile, has sold just more than 10,000 of its tickets, according to a school official. Plus, the Pacific-10 Conference will cover the cost of any unsold tickets, per league policy. ACC schools are fully responsible for the costs of 6,000 bowl tickets, and partially responsible for the next 2,000 tickets sold. After 8,000 tickets are sold, the conference's 12 schools share the cost of any remaining unsold tickets." Didn't need an upper deck for that game despite what appeared to be robust attendance on paper. I guess we could argue whether Stanford was out in force. Sure is a long way to go.
2012 Fiesta - 67,000 on paper, but I don't recall the crowd on TV. Better game than most Stanford fans will give credit due to kicking woes. Although didn't Luck throw one of his surprisingly frequent pick sixes that made a pretty big difference? Everyone focuses on not having him fling it nursing a tie with the clock running down while in field goal range. Wrong focus.
2013 Rose - It's the Rose.
2014 Rose - It's the Rose. Although lots of green in the stands.
2014 Foster Farms. Stanford fans couldn't be bothered to motor the nine extra freeway ramps. Or nine fewer ramps for those living to the south. Plenty of excuses, but this is the definition of not traveling well.
2016 Rose - Felt a bit like a Steelers' home game, but again it's the Rose.
So in conclusion, Stanford travels well to the Rose Bowl.

An Iowa rematch would be fun. So would a Northwestern rematch. When NU cancelled a few games in our series we were forced to wait until 2019 to get the return trip to the Farm.Â

I'm convinced that the 2014 Foster Farms Bowl Stanford attendance was mostly local and adversely affected by the terrible weather. Also, I was at the Orange, Fiesta, and three most recent Rose Bowls (holy cow, pinch me), but I couldn't justify a trip back for the Foster Farms...the timing just didn't work with Christmas and family stuff. I'll try to make it for whatever bowl Stanford earns this year, but I can't guarantee anything...unless we luck out into the Alamo Bowl (or even Sun), which I will definitely go for.

Can anyone envision a scenario by which Stanford makes it to the Alamo Bowl this season?
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

One of the challenges this year is that there is one team that is doing great so far (Washington), and then a whole bunch of teams that will probably end with 3-5 losses. The problem is that there could basically be a 5-way tie for 2nd or 3rd place in the conference (Utah, Colorado, Wasu, Stanford and SC), which makes the situation so fluid and the outcome so uncertain.

FWIW, the Foster Farms Bowl is the only Stanford bowl game I've been to. I took public transit from Palo Alto, which worked well going down there, not so well coming back. It was super cold and windy, but fun to watch the Cardinal destroy their opponent while listening to the drunk-sounding stadium PA announcer.
