Stanford up 35-23. Nice solid half -- maybe not their absolute best work. Still need to get more out of the point guard position; at least a little bit of scoring would be nice. CSU has been fairly successful at clogging the lane and pulling down boards. The latter, at least, should be addressable.

With 12 minutes to go, the score is now 41-34. That means for the 2nd half, we've been outscored 6-11 so far. In case you want to tune in and send positive vibes to our team!

Offense has gotten quite cold -- we did try for a nice "elevator doors" play, but nothing came of it. (Well, a foul...)

free throws have also been a liability -- Stanford's 8-14 from the line. And Travis hasn't gotten many shots either.

Stanford scuffled to a 56-49 win. Offensively the team looked...less than great: it didn't have a FG for a long five-minute stretch between 6:30 or so to 1:30 or so. Free throw shooting was bleh.
On the other hand the defense mostly did what it wanted. Hopefully this is more a floor than an average.

I'm guessing Haase is going to have them work on breaking presses this week...

I know its early in the year for RPI, and Im far from an expert on this, but seems really odd that our RPI rank is 218 after beating 4Â teams supposedly ranked in the top 100. Is this just gibberish or do I need some educating on how this works, or both?

Is this just gibberish or do I need some educating on how this works, or both?RPI is notoriously unstable early in the season before the sample sizes get large enough to be meaningful. And because lots of teams are undefeated so far, the early rankings weight opponents win % even more than normal. Our opponents have not exactly covered themselves in glory so far. In games against non-Stanford teams, Harvard is 0-1, CSUN is 1-1, Weber is 0-1. Colo St. hasn't factored in yet on ESPN, but it has on Warren Nolan's site, which has us 28th in RPI as of this minute: http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2017/rpi-live

More generally, RPI is kind of a crappy way to rank teams. Ken Pomeroy's rankings use adjusted efficiency on offense and defense, which makes more sense to me. http://kenpom.com
I like seeing how we're doing in the rankings, but I wouldn't give it much thought until closer to the P-12 season.

Yesterday was the first time I'd been to an MBB game in five years. It was a lot sloppier than the previous three but after the first 10 mins it seemed like the team had the game in hand. Yes Colorado State cut the lead to five in the last couple minutes but even then I didn't see any anxiety in the team - unlike what I'd watched on TV the last few years when leads like that were regularly blown.
The level of competition now takes some big steps up. Hopefully the ugly second half is out of their system and they will play better in the next two weeks. I will be at the St Mary's game a week from Wednesday.
Other thoughts:
- Team must hit from outside more to open up space for the bigs. CSU packed it in and it brought our offense to a screeching halt in the second half
- Our bigs are BIG - and DEEP. Gotta find more ways to get them the ball inside
- I continue to fail to understand why Sanders is starting over Cartwright. The offense moved much faster & more crisply with #2 running the point. I just don't see any area where Sanders is substantially better, and a couple where Cartwright is (scoring, steals). Offense really stalled when Sanders & Cartwright were on the floor together. Not a good pairing at all IMO.
- Love me some Pickens. Hope he continues to get big minutes.

And Travis's misses LOOK much better than last year! I'm giving him style points and believing that he has turned the corner on his shooting issues! 8)
