I guess I'm alone in this, but I still like the idea of scheduling a western US group of five team (not FCS) each year. San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State, or maybe another up-and-coming Mountain West school. It's a lot easier in terms of travel/time-zone adjustment for the team, and we could probably get a 2 home-1 away deal.

Just looked at the London Times Higher Education supplement.  Top 20 American colleges that play D1 football include (in order):

Stanford
C.Al
UCLA
Michigan
Illinois
Wisconsin
Duke
Washington

Next five are Texas, Northwestern, Ga Tech, Penn State, Purdue and Ohio State.  Then, Minnesota, Michigan State, UNC, then SC.

Oh, a Stanford/Michigan matchup would be EPIC! And would resolve the debate who was the actual offensive force when Harbaugh was here!

I think a Stanford - Michigan matchup would be loads of fun, particularly in years where we are on the high side of the wave. But, I don't see how it would resolve the question of the relative roles of Shaw vs Roman* in Stanford's offense in 2010.
Besides, the real offensive force when Harbaugh was here was Andrew Luck.
