There was another thread talking about this, but I thought it deserved its own...

Though it was meaningless in the standings, the Sun Bowl victory gave Stanford a 10-3 season.  Stanford has now won 10+ games in 6/7 years. Only Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma can claim this accomplishment. 

It makes the fact Stanford is the only one of these programs to not be in the playoff a little frustrating, but nonetheless, it's pretty incredible for a school with Stanford's admissions requirements to do this.  I can only wonder how many players on those other four teams could be admitted to Stanford.

And our 7,000 undergrad enrollment is tiny compared to Clemson at 18,000, OK at 22K, AL at 32,500, and tOSU at 45K.  Never forget that Stanford is exceptional!

Sorry, I don't mind criticism of the playcalling, which was not above reproach, but I do object to insulting Coach Shaw.  After 6 seasons as head coach he has accomplished:
A 64-17 record; 42-12 in conference
A winning season every year
A bowl game every year; 4/6 years a BCS caliber bowl; three Rose Bowls
4-2 records in bowls, 2-1 in Rose Bowls
10 wins in 5 out of his 6 seasons
3 conference championships, 1 other year he tied for first in the P12-North
Never lost a big game
Never lost against UCLA
4-2 against Notre Dame
5-2 against USC

And through it all, he has carried himself with grace and integrity and has run a program we can all be proud of.

Today he played without his starting all-American tailback, he lost his starting QB in the first half, he is facing probably the first QB pick of the draft... in a game that, if we are honest with ourselves, many of us didn't think we could win (and some of us went that way in the pic-em game).  I think for all that he is done, David Shaw has bought himself some respect from the teams fans.  As I said, criticizing the play-calling is to be expected on a board like that, and if I am honest with myself, I think Shaw probably could have squeezed some more points out of the offense, given the number of red zone trips we had in the game.  But I think personal putdowns are beneath us.

Coming into this year another Pac12 coach over seven seasons as OC and head coach was 79-15 with many Pac12 championships, BCS bowls as well as NC games. I'm sure the respect for him was high as he was fired.

That's not cantankorour; It's harsh but fair. And even if I disagree and can come up with reasons why the comparison is flawed, that's the sort of stuff I expect in a sports message board.  But as I said, the objection I had was to making comparisons with a snail, which I thought was uncalled for, and not fair.

Shaw has a record of 7-2 in post-season games (3-0 in conference championship games, 4-2 in bowl games). That record was compiled against quality competition. There are no patsies in post-season games.

Shaw has a record of 20-10 against ranked teams. Again, quality competition.

I'll give you more conference games.  Following the ASU game, they play Arizona, then go on the road to US¢ and UCLA.  That is going to be a hard punch in the mouth.

Should Haase turn out to be good, though, they will be back, likely in year three, as we've seen with Enfield at US¢ and in football with Petersen and Harbaugh.  It is a bit hard to believe that Washington's bowl opponent was Southern Miss last year.
