I still remember how Holder shut down Smith-Shushter in the 2nd half of the Pac-12 champ. game last season. I was also watching some old NFL film re-runs and got worried when I learned the Paul Hornung and Greg Cook (qb for Cincinnati before Ken Anderson) had career-ending shoulder injuries. At any rate, Stanford likes at least rotation of 3 cornerbacks so I could see Murphy being part of the top 3.

I hope a nose tackle emerges so that Phillips and Dylan Jackson can be the primary tackles on either side of the NT in the base defense. Mike Williams?

One of Williams or Bo Peek(maybe Dalyn Wade Perry) will have to step up.

We have Phillips, Jackson (who made a small, at best, impact this year - correct me if I'm remembering this wrong), and a whole bunch of unproven and inexperienced guys who aren't even that big. Our heaviest DL is Bo Peek, a FRESHMAN. NOBODY tops 300 pounds. We had a lot of 2 DL sets this year where we'd rush a fifth LB off the edge because it was for some reason better than putting in a true defensive lineman. This speaks volumes to me about how unprepared they were to play.

Against the Pac 12 teams you have to play nickel the majority of snaps. Stanford elects to sub out a DL instead of an ILB. Partly probably a scheme and partly depth on the DL.

I think Buncom has more upside than Murphy buy 23 has an experience edge. Good to have backups that can play.

I think your view is correct, but we also have Shannon Turley working his magic as well as an entire offseason for these players to pack on some muscle.  Let's just wait and see.

Well, if it helps we didn't have anyone over 300 pounds playing this year and the DL seemed to do pretty well. And we use 2 DL because that's pretty common when you go to Nickel, which we do a lot because college football is pass happy.

So we basically need 1-2 of the 5 current Fr/RSFr and whatever DL we recruit (Wade-Perry or maybe Ryan Johnson) to be serviceable. I'd hope at least one is good enough to play a decent number of snaps.
