OT(?): New Band Director Named

The quote from the Band manager certainly sounds promising, but I'm curious as to why Russell Gavin (degrees from Auburn, ND, FSU) would have even applied for such a job. Seems like the LSJUMB is roughly 180 degrees from the impressive breadth of his accumulated experience. Sure hope it all works out. We missed the Band in El Paso four months ago!

In fact, his experience is exactly what the Band needs... field show performance (DCI experience is very valuable... if you like it LOUD), music arranger, educator (teach students rather than dictate to students), key role on a student conduct board, and an outsider who can help address the echo-chamber effects (both within LSJUMB and Stanford overall).

Because current Band leadership AND Band alumni AND Etch were involved in this decision, I am optimistic.
They have my confidence.
(Which reminds me of this line from a bad movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl55ltDG5Ow )

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working .I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. Peter Gibbons

There are a few things missing from that press release. The notable issue is whether he will have any association with the Music Department, and whether he will be tenured faculty. It sounds like the answer to both is "no." He was hired by the Athletics department and will be lecturer (normally meaning untenured) in the "Graduate School of Education" (rather odd, although perhaps music education is no longer housed in Music?) Even if he has exactly the right persona for the role, it bothers me that the 'Arthur P. Barnes Director of Band" won't have either of these two key qualities that Arthur P. Barnes had. It calls into question how much independence he will have during moments of crisis. But why would he give up a tenured (Associate) level position to come here without a similar position? Maybe he does have tenure, or at least retreat rights, perhaps to Education. In any case, some unanswered questions.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't offered a position in the School of Music. But I have nothing on which to base that opinion.

I think that for the most part, the Department of Music doesn't think that there is anything about the band that is related to anything they do.
On the other hand, over the years there have been a significant number of individual band members that have had significant presence in that deparment.
