I know Kmetovic and Albert from their photos up in the Treehouse. I remember reading about how awesome they were, and thinking how far we'd fallen in the depths of the Buddyball years...
I wonder if the photos are still up. Or if the Treehouse is even still around....

The 49ers play host to the Panthers in week 1. I wonder if Thomas will get a shot at McCaffrey at all.

He put up 23 points on Stanford's defense, so he's got to be a budding legend, right?
Well at least the Browns & 49ers can truly say they are no longer the worst-run franchises in the NFL. That distinction now clearly belongs to Daaa Bearsss, or should I say Duuuuuh Bearsssss. Regardless of the awful pick, the trade alone is enough to earn this moniker. Why would you give up additional picks to get a guy you were going to get anyway when you really need to rebuild at multiple positions and that requires quantity more than quality draft picks?

The only reason I can think is that another team was negotiating with the 49ers to trade up to #2 for Mitch, so if they had not given some value, they would have lost Mitch.

Thomas becomes only the 3rd Stanford defensive player ever drafted in the 1st round. The others - Darrien Gordon and Jeff Siemon.

Actually Spiny Greg Sampson, a DT on two Rose Bowl teams, was the sixth pick (Oilers) in 1972.

Or perhaps the 49ers said THEY would take Mitch if the Bears didn't go along. Sitll, it is hard to imagine why getting Mitch was such a big deal for them. Nobody can seriously expect he will start right away in the NFL (can they?). He is a project now even if he is great later.

Because of Goose, I googled "Maskirovka" and now know what it means (I can't be the only one, right?).
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

You are not alone on this Papa John. I found this phrase from the Wikipedia article of interest:
"...including manipulation of "the facts", situation and perceptions to affect the media and opinion around the world..."

Thanks, Phogge. nfl.com listed Sampson as a T (same position listing as for Peat, Murphy and Fleming) and so I assumed that meant offensive tackle.Â

I remember that term from ages ago. Not really sure from where, but I think it was a Tom Clancy novel.

Sampson was a DT in college and played his first two seasons in the NFL at the position, without much success. He was switched to OT the following year and played there for the next five seasons, even being selected all-AFC. Unfortunately just as his career was peaking he suffered a head injury in training camp which resulted in a blood clot and he never played again. Thus he is listed as an offensive lineman but played on defense in college and was drafted for that position.

McCaffrey #8 to Carolina. Guess the Panthers don't care that he skipped the Sun Bowl.

Quote:When Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette decided to skip their bowl games last December, nobody really knew how it would impact their NFL draft status, or that of future players considering the same choice.
We found out very quickly Thursday night -- with a rubber stamp of approval from the NFL. All those who thought perhaps league executives would frown upon players abandoning their teams to get a jump on their NFL careers got a resounding answer.

Congratulations to Michael! I hope he has a longer lived tenure than most of the WRs Detroit has ended up with lately (Megatron being the only exception I remember). Stafford will get the ball to Rector if the pass is there :)

I thought his potential as a professional receiver was quite limited, but he's found his way to what could be a very productive destination for him. Stafford has a big arm, but he won't be able to overthrow Rector. Try as he might.
