I think the average calfan is fatalistic about the Rose Bowl. Here's a case in point: On my wife's side of the family, there are Old Blues galore. She has aunts and uncles and cousins who bleed blue and gold. One aunt, who at one time worked part time for their women's athletics department, has even picked out a plot in the Mountain View Cemetery (off of Piedmont) because it has a view of the Campanile.Â
It was December of 1999 when we were over at this aunt's and uncle's house for Christmas late morning. I was proudly looking forward to my first trip to the Rose Bowl in one week for Y2K day. We learned that the two of them had gone to the Rose Bowl on Jan 1, 1999 with their across the street neighbors, who were Wisconsin alums. Why did two C.al alums go to a UCLA-Wisconsin Rose Bowl? She said it herself: "We don't think we'll ever see C.al in the Rose Bowl."
