[quote author=johnnyo53 link=topic=17240.msg198399#msg198399 date=1504019873]THE MAIN ATTRIBUTES OF A PUNT OR KO RETURNER ARE: 1) PROTECT THE FOOTBALL 2) COURAGE 3) MAKING CHICKEN SALAD OUT OF CHICKEN SH*T 4) MAKING GOOD DECISIONS 5) OVERCOMING BAD DECISIONS. MAYBE TYLER HAD THE FIRST GAME JITTERS, BUT HE SEEMED TOO TENTATIVE AND I DIDN'T LIKE SOME OF HIS RECEIVING TECHNIQUE (OVER THE SHOULDER, NOT SQUARED UP ON THE FOOTBALL). MAYBE HE'S THE BEST WE GOT, AT ANY RATE, I DIDN'T LIKE THE FAIR CATCH AND THOUGHT HE WASN'T EXACTLY BUSTING IT UP IN THERE...TIME WILL TELL.
Mea culpa...I missed the first part of the 1Q--so he had a drop then? And then I remember one punt where he had to run backwards to field it--bad misjudgment around the Stanford 40yd line. That was indeed worrisome. So either Alamar gets Tyler's head on straight, or we might see a change when JJAW comes back and the pecking order reshuffles.

On Rice's first punt Tyler called for a fair catch although the closest Rice cover man was about 15 yards away and being blocked. Tyler muffed the punt but scrambled and jumped on it a few yards away since no Rice player was anywhere close.

I'M NOT OVERLY CONCERNED ABOUT TYLER YET, JUST MICROMANAGING LIKE WE ALL DO ON THESE THINGS AND BEING PESSIMISTIC AS I GENERALLY AM. NOTHWITHSTANDING THE FOREGOING, MY SELF ANALYSIS IS ACTUALLY THAT I'M VERY OPTIMISTIC- I EXPECT THE WORST SO THAT I'M NEVER DISAPPOINTED...

Yeah, if you have been a Stanford fan for a long time, you probably have learned to keep your expectations under control.
More recent Stanford fans likely don't feel the need.
