Congrats to Brown!  Oddly enough, I was on the other side of DTLA that night (Stanford friend's wedding).  And whoever cues the music should explain the standard by which good speeches are cut off.

My impression is that it's a time thing, even if the speech is at the level of Lincoln's second inaugural.

Yes, but Nicole Kidman (best actress in a limited series) spoke for 2:45 before the music started playing, while Brown (best actor in a dramatic series) was cut off before he reached the two minute mark. So level of celebrity seems to be a factor, rather than a consistent time allowance.

Incorrect. He won Best Supporting Actor in 2016 for "The People vs O.J. Simpson" but this year's win was for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for "This Is Us".

Totally about star power. If they cut Nicole Kidman off, her reps will complain and the showrunners will get shit for it from the network.

What I don't understand is why the producers think people watch award shows to see Colbert run around doing a cabaret routine. Isn't the point of Award Shows, well, the awards? Aren't the speeches the part people care most about, and why they watch? I've taken to just watching clips of the speeches online afterwards because the whole show is so tedious. If they cut out all the nonsense then every winner would get the well-earned time to give the speech they want to give.

Congrats to all the Stanford alums at the Emmy's - Jo-Issa Diop '07 (Issa Rae as she is now known) was also nominated for several Emmys for Insecure, one of my favorite new shows. Amy Aniobi '06 is a producer and writer for the show. So awesome to see our young alums out there making great art and conquering the world.  8)
