Given the number of times both Costello and Chryst pulled on the read-option against Utah -- versus barely at all (if at all) early in the season -- I have a hunch this was a deliberate coaching point designed to reduce the risk of injury earlier in the season.

I agree that's part of it, but it also might have been a direct result of the respect Utah gave Love.  Two consecutive 250+ yard gains, and the end may have been told "don't worry about the QB", just make sure you don't get burned by Love.  The QB keeper is good for 5 - 10 yards.  The one read option where the DE got caught and Chryst gave Love the ball resulted in a TD 69 yards later.

Some athletes just never fully regain confidence in what they could do before. Perhaps Chryst was being tentative when he came back, combined with a bit of rust. Perhaps seeing Costello play well lit a fire under his butt and removed that tentativeness. It's hard to say if that could make a difference, but if he can keep up his Utah-level performance then we'll be fine.

Hmm, that's an interesting comment to put out.  I'm one of Chryst's biggest cheerleaders (if only by comparison to others here; I too want to see more of Costello), and yet it is hard for me to take the comment seriously.  Perhaps to be filed under the "Shaw sometimes says things for very specific reasons, and we are not the audience" file.  I'm guessing he thinks Chryst could do with a dose of confidence?

Yeah, it's hard to take the sum of Shaw's remarks seriously. I'm sure there's a possible universe in which:
1) Keller Chryst might turn pro; and,
2) is one of the better QBs in the conference; and,
3) will yield at least some snaps to Costello, his backup; who,
4) played about equivalently as well as Chryst.

You can figure out an elaborate scenario in which all of these things are true, but it's very odd.

Yeah, it's hard to take the sum of Shaw's remarks seriously. I'm sure there's a possible universe in which:
1) Keller Chryst might turn pro; and,
2) is one of the better QBs in the conference; and,
3) will yield at least some snaps to Costello, his backup; who,
4) played about equivalently as well as Chryst.

You can figure out an elaborate scenario in which all of these things are true, but it's very odd.

One of the better discussions I've read on this board. Thanks. When it gets right  down to it, the eyes have it. Which is why Costello is the people's choice. Chryst is not fluid athletically. That is not to say he's unathletic. He just looks somewhat stiff. Costello looks much more athletic. He's much more fluid in his movements.

It appeared to me that Chryst did a better job Sat than he had previously of getting the ball out quickly. I'm hoping he continues that trend.

One thing that bothers me - neither Chryst nor Costello wows me with their accuracy. Although, again Chryst on Sat appeared more accurate than in the past. 5 throws stand out, all in the second quarter. The first was a pass that Smith dropped. It was thrown a little behind him. But it was perfectly placed. He threw Smith open. Second through fourth were the three third and long conversions against the blitz. All three were perfectly thrown. The last with a pass rusher in his face. The last was a third and 4 cross field out to Wedington. It was a fairly long throw, thrown low and away. Where it could (should) be caught but cannot be defended.

SSS to say the least. But hopeful nonetheless.

We will see if he builds on it versus Oregon.
