I have no doubt what Haase is trying to do and how he's trying to do it. He's very transparent. The last few games his team hasn't been able to execute. It's TBD whether that's because he's a crappy coach or his personnel is incapable or something in between. Time will tell.Â
I spent years trying to figure out what Dawkins was trying to do. I think Dawkins spent years trying to figure out what he was trying to do, too. No Johnny, staring blankly with hands on hips isn't going to lead to the answer.
And, as previously mentioned, if things don't improve then Haase will eventually get the same treatment as Dawkins. However, it's my hope and expectation that Haase will leave on his own terms...

If it had been Dawkins on his second year at Stanford, the reaction would have been different than if it had been Dawkins with the 6th, 7th or 8th year in the program.

If it had been Dawkins on his second year at Stanford, the reaction would have been different than if it had been Dawkins with the 6th, 7th or 8th year in the program.

Couple of random adds:
(1) Daejon Davis looked much more like a point guard in the headlights - overpenetrating against the zone, without much idea what he was going to do, and ending up throwing up wild shots at the rim or trying to pass through 3 defenders to someone. But I don't think you want Haase lighting into a top-flight recruit in his second game.
(2) To be honest, it didn't look like last year - it looked like the women's team in the last year of Chiney - one dominant low post player, surrounded by three to five defenders, and the other four players standing on the perimeter trying to figure out how to enter the ball against a sagging zone. Without Pickens to play the role of a Samuelson. I was rooting for a similar offense - just throw the ball at the rim and go for the o-board, which to a certain extent is what Silva did. But none of the freshmen are strong or sure enough to finish through contact inside.
(3) It doesn't help that FT shooting fell off a cliff; leaving 10 points on the line.
(4) They played young. Every time they got close, someone would take an early shot, or drive ill-advisedly, and then it would snowball. One of which was on Travis - the failure to box his man out on a missed FT down 4 with 21 seconds left.

Because Haase is in year 2, not year 7 or whatever.
He's also starting 3 frosh and we have multiple injuries among our better shooters. That implies there's some upside potential (which I don't think there was anymore with Johnny).

That was always my big issue - Dawkins had good to very good talent, at least at the top, on his teams. I don't know of many other teams that had 4 multi-year starters drafted/play in the NBA whose teams made the NCAA tournament once.

The other big downer was - why wasn't Humphrey CAMPED OUT in the high post? Instead, they brought Travis outside - I guess they were more confident in Reid's driving, but using Humphrey to attack the weak spot in a 2-3 seemed like a natural thing to me.

No, I'm not comparing Haase to Dawkins at all, but I AM comparing what the team looked like last night to what it looked like during the equivalently bad games in the Dawkins era and, with all due respect, contending that there is no EMPIRICAL basis for alleging that it was Dawkins' fault when the team looked that way before, but is NOT Haase's fault when they look that way now.
Believe me, I'm looking forward to Haase getting the team to absolutely flatten Northeastern on Friday, if only to keep that other guy you mention from completely blowing a gasket... :)

Not comparing anyone to anyone. But the perimeter defense was awful. Got beat off the dribble several times. Rotation was slow. And the close outs lousy. Way too many good look threes. Easily fixable. (Although lack of quickness hurts.) Much more so than not being able to shoot. Dont care how good a coach you are. If they cant shoot you are going to struggle. Obviously.

The big difference I've seen so far is that this team can get guys open but they can't hit shots - that's a skills issue and it can be fixed with practice or personnel. Under Dawkins, those guys would never get open looks because the offensive system couldn't generate them - that's a coaching issue.

There were a couple "I don't know what to do/we're doing" looks out there last night, but most of the problems were in player execution:Â missing open shots, taking bad ones, and making poor passes (or NOT making the entry pass to Travis).Â
It's not like there wasn't a plan or ball movement (which was a major gripe of mine with Dawkins). Besides, the guy sitting next to you (whom I know pretty well) always overreacts to one bad data point. I remain slightly bullish on this team, assuming a return to health for the roster sooner rather than later.
The big difference I've seen so far is that this team can get guys open but they can't hit shots - that's a skills issue and it can be fixed with practice or personnel. Under Dawkins, those guys would never get open looks because the offensive system couldn't generate them - that's a coaching issue.

So you want to pick the better coach. Thats easy. Take the one with the better players.
Fans always center on coaching. But its a players game.
It looks to me as if the main theme of this thread is everybody comparing Haase to Dawkins with most saying Haase is better, some saying they don't know yet, and some at least hinting that they seem about the same so far.
That's the nature of the game, every coach is going to be compared to every other.
