Stanford 79Â Kent State 54
Kent State gave us a real challenge, playing a zone and nailing three point shots. They sliced our lead to 10 deep in the third quarter before we put the game away.Â
Carrington had 24 points on 10/14 shooting, including two treys to break her drought from long range.
Sniezek scored 10 point in the first quarter including 2 treys before going dormant the rest of the game. She did add 7 assists and 2 steals to go with only 2 turnovers.Â
Smith began to look like her old self with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.Â
Fingall looked decent with 11 points, and Jerome and Williams had positive cameos.
Overall, we shot 56% and 35% from three, outrebounded Kent State and had only 11 turnovers. Kent State seemed like a much better team than UCSD, UCR, or CSU Bakersfield, and so it was a tougher test, and we seemed to pass it; several players showed progress. Numerous positive trends in this game--chiefly with the ball actually going through the hoop.
Stanford 74 Belmont 53
A tale of two halves. Belmont's three point shooting seemed to be everything we expected in the first half, when they nailed 8 of them, but a much better man defense by Sniezek and Romano (chiefly) controlled their best shooters in the second half--holding them to 3 treys. We were tied at 37 at the half, but held Belmont to 16 points in the second half, including a 9:55 scoreless stretch.Â
As for our offense, it was the Alanna Smith day. Alana scored 23 on 10/16 shooting, with 11 rebounds. She had 4 fouls.
In fact, our 5 starters all had +/- scores of 20 or better, while everyone from bench was between -4 and 2.Â
Sniezek shot the ball repeatedly but was only 3/12, but her 7 assists to 1 turnover helped.Â
Romano scored 11 points to go with her long, athletic defense on the perimeter--much needed.
Carrington looked mortal today with 9 points on 3/12 shooting.
Johnson scored 8 on 3/8 shooting with 8 rebounds and 0 turnovers.Â
Four starters had more than 30 minutes in this game--Tara clearly thought they were needed. The only bench players with double digit minutes were Jerome and Fingall--mostly because of Smith's 4 fouls. Both had quiet stat lines but Jerome scored 4 on 2/4 shooting.
We had 38 points in the paint as Smith went to work, 8 fastbreak points, 19 layups, and only 5 turnovers for the game. Rebounding was +8. We shot 43% for the game while holding them to 36%.Â
Ohio State 94 Stanford 82 in OT
We led the game from the opening until several minutes into the 4th quarter, then fought back valiantly with a layup by Smith with 4 seconds left to tie it up and send it to overtime. Sadly, in OT we hit a wall and gave up a 13-0 run to lose. Still, very impressive progress over our first game--and we did it without McPhee. Mitchell was held without a basket in the first half, but exploded for 37 points before the day was done, with 19/20 free throws. Mavunga was thoroughly handled, with Smith outrebounding her, out scoring her, and even blocking her.Â
We did wind up out rebounding tOSU 45-39, a brobdingnagian change from the first game. What really cost us were 23 turnovers compared with 9 for them.Â
Smith played 41 minutes and scored 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for a dominant performance in the paint.
Anna Wilson scored a career high 21 points on 7/8 three point shooting--and she did this in only 19 minutes because she had 4 fouls. Imagine what she could have done had she been able to stay in the game for more minutes.
Carrington played 30 minutes and had an off game tonight, with 2/9 field goals and 6 turnovers. Turnovers seem to be her downfall. She did have 4 assists and 3 steals, though.
Johnson fouled out, but seems to have had a lot to do with controlling Mavunga. In 24 minutes she scored 6 points and grabbed 2 rebounds.
Sniezek played 38 minutes had 4 assists to 4 turnovers, but took 6 shots and made 6 points.
Romano played 21 minutes and had only 2 points, but got credited by the announcer as being a defensive stalwart.
Jerome played 24 minutes and scored 4 points, nabbed 2 rebounds and had 2 turnovers.
Conclusion:
We played 3 very good teams and beat 2 and took the other to overtime. Along the way we saw enormous progress--despite the fact that we played the whole weekend without McPhee. Each game Smith got better and better until she turned in a Jayne/Nneka/Chiney type of night against an elite team. Anna Wilson showed herself to be a superb offensive weapon. Romano's defense looks to be a key factor. Carrington seems to run a bit hot and cold--it will be good to get McPhee back so the two can complement each other.Â
Now two more away games before we see our team back in Maples.
