I thought she would receive this--it was obvious unless someone else also "went off" this weekend. A nice story about the game, to be sure. I particularly liked this:
She also got national player of the week on January 1 after our home stand sweep of UCLA and USC. But that week the PAC 12, in its infinite wisdom, gave their player of the week to Sabrina Ionescu, not Britt.
Ah revenge is sweet.
Quote:For a team that has played more games this season against ranked opponents than any other, and suffered for it more often than not, it was a hard-earned and significant win for Stanford (16-8). But Sunday was the masterpiece, a signature performance in a signature win -- and at the end of a week that saw several of the teams in the NCAA's top 16 suffer setbacks

Why did she play so little in first half?

I wonder if that was part of what pushed her into overdrive in the second half? I feel like Geno uses that tactic (benching star players when they're not stepping up) to communicate a message, and more often than not, it works. I believe Pat Summitt also did it back in the day. Maybe there's something to the tough love approach, which Tara doesn't utilize quite as much as some.

Speaking of which, I didn't realize how unhappy Geno was with his team this year. From a few weeks ago:
"The guys that dont play much, theres a reason they dont play much, said Auriemma, whose hopes for developing a deeper bench were set back a significant step. And if I could have it my way, Id give every person who came their money back. That was the most disgraceful effort Ive seen at Connecticut in 32 years Ive been here. . . .
It doesnt bother me anymore, Auriemma said. I see this every day in practice. Im beyond bothered. I see it every single day. Some days we just hide it better than others. And you know what? Give Tulsa all the credit in the world. They made shots. They were able to take the ball where they wanted. We won because we have All-Americans and they dont. Thats the bottom line.
Weve got a team that does what they want to do, when they want to do it, how they want to do it. And if they dont feel like it, they dont do it. Plain and simple. And then when our All-Americans have a good day, we win. And we win because we have more All-Americans than everybody else. . . .
Im not looking anymore, he said. In fact, we might go from six to five instead of six to seven or eight. You cant give up more layups than [Stevens] gives up. Thats not possible."
Yeesh. I am glad Tara doesn't ever go that far. That 22-0 looks a lot glossier on the rankings sheet than it must feel on the inside...

McPhee won Pac 12 player of the week, too. Not a surprise, but the last time she won the national award the Pac 12 snubbed her.
Williams won Pac 12 freshman of the week, for the second time this year. We swept the weekly honors.
