Fullmetal: An early-adopter Cardboarder who actually rowed crew.
The thing that jumped out to me was the mention that the Pac-12 rowing championships at Lake Natoma east of Sacramento. Natoma was where I did a great deal of my rowing. At the time the facilities there were....ummm, humble. Gravel parking lot, only one very modest boathouse used by the Sac State rowers and some ummm, marginal-but-afloat docks. Now they are hosting the Pac-12 championships. Actually, first I've heard of it. Might have done so for years. I was using the facility when they put in their first new dock and paving the parking lot, but had no idea where it was headed. This (

Good lake for rowing. Narrow and relatively sheltered. Only downside is it runs into deep canyon on the eastern end. In Sacramento's Spring-through-Fall heat it is like a freaking furnace back in there. Not a breath of wind. Not relevant for the actual racing but those poor crews training every afternoon had my respect. ( I'd turn back and let the kids go on in, building their toughness and character.)
Oh, btw, fullmetal, the rowers I see are the dedicated souls from University of Alabama Huntsville, the "science/engineering/technical" school of the U of A system. It's a kick to see them share the riverside dock area with the bass-boat crowd, guys who later without a thought will blow by them on the river going 30-50 mph.
