Virginia Tech had 9 players in the box (and a tenth one just outside the frame). No deception whatsoever, and yet we still managed to get a big run out of it.
I have seen the big run by Taylor at around 2:50 used as an example in a couple of tutorials on Power.
It's a no receiver set, 11 Hokies within 3 yards of the LOS. Some bad angles by Hokies (Marecic can barely get to the kick-out block because the defender runs so wide - but it's so wide that he takes himself out of the play). Some devastating blocks by Stanford guys.

My impression was that those excessive shifts never actually did any good. You'll note that play at 8:22 went for no gain.
The shifts did tend to really annoy opposing coaches, which may have had a certain value right there.
