It seems to me Stanford's lack of dominance in the trenches may be being mirrored by an increase in number of players missing games due to injury this season. Yes, we know, every team has injuries. But this year seems to be especially bleak for Stanford, and it started in the off season. I wanted to compile a list, just to try getting a sense for how injuries and the inconsistency that comes as a result, might be impacting the 2018 team's performance. The following players have missed time due to injury by my count. Please add anyone I missed.
Offense
QB KJ Costello (Out all of Spring)
QB Davis Mills
RB Bryce Love
RB Trevor Speights
WR Connor Wedington
C Jesse Burkett
OT Foster Sarell
OT AT Hall
OT/OG Devery Hamilton
OG Nate Herbig
WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside
And I'm fairly certain OG Brandon Fanaika and OT Walker Little have been dinged up as well.
Defense
DT Bo Peek
DE Jovan Swann (it looks like he didn't play against UW, and Schaffer did instead)
OLB Curtis Robinson
OLB Joey Alfieri
OLB Casey Toohill
S Ben Edwards
S Malik Antoine
S Brandon Simmons
CB Alijah Holder
K Jet Toner
By my count, this is 20 players not including Costello (I put him on here because maybe with more Spring reps, the O coaches feel better about opening up the offense earlier in the season). Anyway, this seems like an excessive amount to me. is it a coincidence in terms of more injuries coinciding with softer play in the trenches? Want to know what y'all think.
It used to be there maybe would be 4-5 guys out with injury for an extended period, but no time can I ever remember half the 2-deep missing games due to injury.
