who was the last left handed catcher (receiver) to appear in a MLB regular season game?
Baseball catcher trivia
Stanford’s Bob Gallagher was benched by Leo Durocher after misplaying a line drive in the outfield one night and spent most of the rest of that season as the Astros’ bullpen catcher, complete with left-handed catcher’s mitt. However I don’t think Bob ever caught in a game.

82, AKA “Touchdown Cookies” peeked. Benny Distefano was the last. Incidentally we faced Gallagher’s #1 ranked team in 1967 at Sunken. At least 15-20 guys signed. I felt like I was facing the ‘27 Yankees. And Bobbbbbbbbbb knows what happened.

Here's an article on Distefano that I came across while researching why there haven't been left-handed catchers.

Quote:Distefano offered two explanations. Bunts toward third base, he said, cause problems for left-handed catchers. In scampering to grab the ball, transferring it to their left hand and throwing to either first or second base, their bodies get closed and clumsy. Throws for right-handers are far more open and natural.
But the primary problem Distefano encountered was with plays at home. Because his glove was on his right hand, every accurate throw to the runner’s side of the plate would have to be reached for backhanded, impeding a quick tag. And on outfielder throws up the first-base line, reaching out with his right hand would leave his throwing shoulder wide open to the runner.
