Just beat # 2 UC Irvine in 4. We are back

I watched the 3rd and 4th sets. The team showed great resilience in coming back from a heavy deficit relatively late in the 3rd set. At first I thought it was nice to generate some momentum for the 4th set, but no way they'll be able to come all the way back. Then I thought, they're going to get close and hopefully losing won't be tough to rebound from in the 4th. Then they took the lead and I knew they were going to win the match. UCI was pretty shook by that come back.
Jasper is fun to watch, and not just because he can't jump through the roof. I loved his emotion and affection for his teammates. At one point he bear hugged our libero and lifted him off his feet. At the end of the match, he was hugging many teammates. He looks like a guy with no guile or inhibitions about showing that he likes his teammates.

After watching the match, I came to three conclusions:
1. Stanford's setter, Paul Bischoff, was better than Chakravorti in all aspects of the game.
2. My sense is that Stanford is somewhat younger and has a higher upside than Irvine. Irvine actually made fewer errors (38-48), but Stanford's athleticism and power allowed Stanford to come back.
3. Volleyball is the ultimate team game in that you're really only as good as your weakest players. Not to point anyone out, but two of Irvine's players were the weakest on the floor.
4. Jasper, while fun to watch, had the lowest hitting percentage on the team.

This is really inspiring to see - been a while since Stanford had a team this good. Gonna have to watch some matches...

Last night was a great accomplishment for the team, and I am so glad for the players and the coaches. However, we get these guys again tomorrow, not to mention we have all of MPSF play ahead of us.
This obviously bodes very well for future success this season, but more games have to be played before I read too too much into this, particularly since the run of play in MPSF is always so daunting.

UC Irvine made sure last night to earn a split of the two matches. Stanford looked good, but to my eye, UCI was better. Their block was better, and the kills were much more distributed. (For Stanford, Ewert and Jasper got what, 80% of the kills between them?) By the end of the evening, I was just glad the good guys didn't get swept. All the games were close though, and exciting -- which was great. There should be good things coming.

Last night's match (which my brother and mom went to) was the reason I expressed a bit of caution regarding reading too much into the first win over UCI. It appears that our block has been much better previously, but last night it was almost non-existent for much of the match. Last night's match honestly looked like the volleyball equivalent of a Big 12 football game.
The Pac-12 broadcast last night indicated that we were projected to finish fourth in the MPSF (behind, UCLA, BYU and Pepperdine); broadcast also mentioned that the top three ranked teams are all from the Big West, so it is at least conceivable that the MPSF might get only one AQ in the NCAA tournament (more likely though, it would be two teams).
As such, very tough schedule ahead with no breaks as far as making noise in the MPSF (and possibly NCAA's) this year.
