This wasn't quite as dramatic as the gif below.
Stowers on third, Wulff on first - Wulff steals second and Stowers goes home on the throw. That sort of thing isn't so rare at NCAA level.
More impressive was Stowers stealing every base he could see, with second and third being back to back pitches or close to it (don't quite remember). Stanford had 4 stolen bases in the first inning and I thought it was going to be a Little Leaguish steal-fest, but no more for the game.
Alex Williams had his best performance of the year (or I guess Santa Clara could just be really bad - they are 10-32).
He went 7 innings and faced just 1 batter over the minimum. Unfortunately that one was a HR. He did give up one other single, that was promptly erased by a double play.
Palisch and Jensen each pitched an inning for a three hitter.

Garibaldi, Boccabella, Fazio, Tim Cullen, Pete Magrini and Ron Calcagno. An inch away from the CWS title. They were still very good when I faced a lineup with three consensus AA’s in 1967. What has happened to them?

Would love to see Santa Clara baseball get it going. Rusty Filter and Jon Karcich always seemed like good guys when they were coaching under #9. Same goes for Garko at Pacific. I've kept close tabs on Pacific ever since I wrote a nasty letter to Muir lambasting his decision to hire Esquer when he could've had Garko. I've never been so happy to be so wrong. But that's why he's in the big chair and I'm in my folding chair from Big Lots.

SCU was strong in the mid-1990s, three seasons with 40+ win seasons (all first place in league) and three NCAA appearances. Same in late 1980s. Then it fell apart. Only two 30+ win seasons in the 21st century. They'd always had good individual players, but zero depth. And a long string of terrible coaches after Taormina, apart from John Oldham.
McClain was the coach when I was there (1980-1984), he was pretty good, but just coached the four years. His pitching coach was Red Walsh, Kerri Walsh's uncle. He taught me how to throw a four seam fastball, I'd been throwing cutters my entire career. Didn't matter, I blew out my arm after my first fall training. My roommate was a 6'10" pitcher who beat Bobby Witt 1-0 in a SoCal All-Star game, he had rotator cuff surgery. Sixteen of McClain's players were drafted, three made it to MLB, one was pretty good (catcher Mike MacFarlane). One was a lefty who had a "cheat" pickoff move that was rarely caught in college, but caught every time in the pros. SCU had some strong catchers over the years; MacFarlane, John Boccabella, Bruce Bochte, Fran Mullins and Charlie Graham, who caught Cy Young and ended up owning the San Francisco Seals. He quit playing, heartbroken after the 1906 earthquake.
Anyway. Current coach has the second-worst record of SCU baseball coaches with more than 100 games coached over a 125+ year baseball history. I doubt very much it will get better.
