BTW, the narrative was always that Charles Comiskey, owner of the White Sox/Black Sox, was a miserly skinflint. In truth, his team payroll was third in the league, and four of his players were paid in the Top 16 in the league:

Still...the White Sox were in both the 1917 and 1919 world series. They wouldn't finish better than fifth until Charles Comiskey died (3rd), then wouldn't make another world series while the Comiskey family owned the team. Bill Veeck bought the Sox in 1958, they went to the WS in 1959.
