Moving the team and the students to the shady side
Closing practices
Using lame two or three word ad slogans
Starting Luck at QB
Harbaugh at coach
Admittedly some of these things are likely only correlated with our new Top 10 football program status. Yet each of the five has been associated with very favorable outcomes on the field. Harbaugh is gone, and Luck only has one more year. So until the team starts losing, I am more than happy to cling to the belief that the first three items on the list are essential to maintaining our new status quo.
If the closed practices help the team psychologically I can believe in the fence. I suspect it is logical to believe that closing the practices has raised the stakes, and helped the team understand that practice is serious game planning rather than a way to entertain a few locals and their pets.
The shady side move is now highly correlated with winning at home. The team is closer to the fans, the players are able to rest in the shade. Together that probably helps as the game enters the fourth quarter. I know the students hate the corner endzone seats, but they were not showing up to watch their 4-8 type teams when the seats and the team were in the sun.
The ad slogans are lame, but the team seems to rally behind those slogans. They have almost transformed their play to match the slogan. So I guess I can only hope for more pathetic two or three word slogans.
We work! We practice behind closed doors! And to save our strength, and our friends' spirit, we rest in the shade!
And until it fails I will reference the spirit of the lame basketball ad slogan and declare..."I am all in!"
