Aside from the fact that the 2-2 final score didn’t do it justice, I have to say that the atmosphere, on a random fall Tuesday against a second rate European club was unbelievable, and several fold louder than anything I’ve experienced watching football (of either variety) stateside, including sitting in the Clemson section in the national championship game last year.

Are the fans inebriated? Or just emotionally unhinged by passion for their team?
Yes.
Also, the stadium has one of the steepest pitches I’ve ever been to, with balconies and a partial overhang, that makes the stadium seem like a more pronounced version of huskie stadium The nosebleed seats are called “the vomitorium”. The acoustics really magnify the effect. Finally, the lower end zone seats on one side feature a group leading the (nonstop) cheers. Apparently it used to be a gang thing, at least according to this article....

No violence that I saw, but the Brugge fans were escorted in with mounted police and were in a netted in section (not sure if it was to protect them or to protect the field from them throwing bottles). They were pretty friggin loud too, though that might have been because Brugge, despite being thoroughly outplayed, got out to a 2-nil lead on a couple of major breakdowns.
If you are ever in Spain (or probably anywhere in Europe) I highly recommend going to a match.
